Change of seasons, Wanyarra (water) and Gurri (kangaroo) time
Hargreaves Mall, Bendigo. 12.00pm, Tuesday July 1

On Thursday, 1 May, people came together to celebrate the turn of the season—Wai-kalk (Golden Wattle) & Datim Datim (Boomerang) 🌿💛
DUMAWUL and City of Greater Bendigo hosted a lunchtime gathering at 12pm in Hargreaves Mall, Bendigo, honouring Dja Dja Wurrung knowledge, Culture, and Country.
Dja Dja Wurrung People (Djaara) have long recognised six seasons, each carrying deep ecological wisdom—guiding when to harvest, hunt, and Care for Country in harmony with complex climate conditions. Despite the disruption caused by the imposed four-season model during colonisation, this invaluable knowledge and practice continue to thrive.
This successful event brought together Indigenous and non-Indigenous workers from the region, allowing them to reflect and reconnect with place and season. Colleagues gathered with curiosity and lunch in hand, embracing the wisdom and traditions of the land.
The next changing of season will be Tuesday, 1 July, when we will welcome the Wanyarra (water) and Gurri (kangaroo) time. The rain is heavy and the waterholes fill. The creeks and rivers run high and spill over Djandak (Dja Dja Wurrung Country).
