Dja Dja Wurrung people would gather for communal gatherings in different locations on Djandak, depending the season. One such place is the Leanganook gathering grounds reflected in this work.
The artist impression depicts the landscape in a modern world, seen by Gnowee the sun, the silent witness of time, one that shows nothing remarkable in the ‘now’, the landscape utilised by grazer’s and crop growing. Gnowee, attest that the landscape once heralded the singing, dancing and celebration of Djaara gatherings, ‘the then’ representation of circular congregation as celebrated by ‘Murrup’ of the lake. The sitting down together of smaller clan groups as they make their way to the larger circular congregations of Dja Dja Wurrung Family and Community gathering, of Malamiya-yu Gurang in the dreaming.
