This coolamon speaks of balance, connection, and the relationship between the physical and spiritual worlds. The contrasting black and white design symbolises the opposites that exist throughout life — creation and destruction, light and darkness, life and death, earth and sky. Rather than opposing one another, these forces exist in balance, each giving meaning and purpose to the other.
Encircling the outer edge of the coolamon is a border representing the spirit world and the presence of unborn spirits — the spirits of animals, plants, people, and all living things yet to come. The continuous design reflects the belief that everything is interconnected and joined together through spirit, Country, and ancestry.
The carving and painted designs across the back represent Waaway (Rainbow Serpent) and the journey it takes through life and Country. As Waaway travels, it brings life to the land through the creation of waterways, nourishing plants, animals, and people. Its movement reminds us that life is constantly flowing, changing, and renewing itself.
The artwork painted across the black side speaks of the connection between the earth below and the sky above — the understanding that everything here on Country is also reflected within the stars and the heavens. The stories of land, water, animals, and spirit are written both across the earth and throughout the night sky.
The smoke within the artwork symbolises ceremony, prayer, and communication with the spiritual world. Rising from the physical world into the sky, the smoke carries thoughts, intentions, and prayers to spirit and ancestors, strengthening the connection between worlds and reminding us that spirit is always present around us.
