Artwork Meaning for ‘Emu in the Sky’

The Emu in the Sky is an important Dreaming story linking land and sky, teaching people when to hunt, gather, and care for Country.

If you look up on a clear night, especially in winter, you can see the dark shape of an emu stretching across the Milky Way. Unlike the bright stars that form pictures in other cultures, this story follows the dark spaces in the sky — a great shadow shaped like an emu lying along the river of stars.

In the Dreaming, the Emu was a powerful ancestral being who travelled across the land. After completing its work on Earth, the Emu rose into the sky to watch over the people and the land.

The Emu in the Sky teaches about balance, respecting seasonal cycles, and taking only what is needed. It is a reminder that the knowledge of the land is written not just in the earth beneath our feet but also in the stars above. The Waaway carving in this artwork is symbolic of the river in the sky – the Milkyway.
