Artwork Meaning for ‘Waaway’ – Ngiyampaa Language (Central West NSW)

Waaway (Rainbow Serpent) is a powerful spiritual being within Aboriginal lore, known as a subterranean water serpent deeply connected to fresh water and life. Emerging from the heart of Mother Earth, Waaway travelled across the land, carving rivers, valleys, and mountain ranges while creating the sacred waterways that nourish Country. Wherever Waaway is, fresh water springs emerge, sustaining people, animals, and plants.

Across many Aboriginal cultures, Waaway is honoured as a protector of waterholes, rivers, and underground springs, reminding people of the deep connection between land, water, and life. The Rainbow Serpent represents creation, transformation, and respect for the natural world, teaching that water is sacred and must be cared for so life can continue to flourish.
